Carl Sandburg College sophomore women’s golfer Jaeden Workman (Morrison, Ill./Morrison) on Wednesday signed to continue her career at Eastern Illinois.

Workman signed with the Panthers following a strong fall season at Sandburg that saw her finish no lower than sixth in each of Sandburg’s five tournaments.

She’s the first Chargers women’s athlete to sign with an NCAA Division I school since 2007, when LaToya Wright went on to play basketball at Nebraska-Omaha.

“Coming into college, I wasn’t really sure if I was going to continue after Sandburg,” Workman said, “and then when I got a couple offers I was really excited I was going to have an opportunity to play an extra two years at the highest level, which is what I’ve always wanted since I was younger.”

Workman posted finishes of second, third, fifth, fifth and sixth during Sandburg’s fall season. She had an 18-hole average of 79.3 over eight rounds and shot in the 70s on four occasions. Her second-place finish came after carding a 78 in the Knox Prairie Fire Classic at Soangetaha Country Club in Galesburg. Workman had two rounds of 76 for her lowest scores of the fall. She did so during the second round of the Augustana Highland Classic on Sept. 1 at Highland Springs in Rock Island and in the first round of the Fighting Scots Invite on Sept. 7 at Gibson Woods in Monmouth.

As a freshman, Workman was part of a Chargers team that made the program’s first NJCAA Women’s Golf Championship appearance. She was Sandburg’s top finisher at nationals, tying for 56th as the Chargers placed 11th as a team.

“I’m really thankful for the coaches (head coach Mike Bailey and assistant Gail Hannam) and my teammates,” Workman said of her time at Sandburg. “They’ve made everything so easy and they’ve improved my game so much. It’s honestly been one of the best experiences of my life.”
